"establish degraded lands for bioenergy production, thereby transforming them back into profitable landscapes"

Senior Scientist Himlal Baral of the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) is conducting research that has perfect synergy with our work here in Zambia, summarised in an article in Forest News.

As the article says: “If the bioenergy sector plants its roots in sustainable agriculture methods, it can simultaneously help achieve other national targets like food security and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Rather than growing the sector through the conversion of healthy ecosystems and arable land, the project seeks to establish a new approach of using Indonesia’s degraded lands for bioenergy production, thereby transforming them back into profitable landscapes.”

Exactly. This is what our project does, on both seriously degraded and contaminated sites and in agroforestry and silvopastoral systems. They even go as far as to mention Pongamia pinnata as a great candidate tree in many situations.
